Tornadoes are created by warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cold air from Canada. When these two air masses meet, they create instability in the atmosphere. A change in wind direction and an increase in wind speed with increasing height creates an invisible, horizontal spinning effect in the lower atmosphere. Rising air within the updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical. An area of rotation, 2-6 miles wide, now extends through much of the storm. Most strong and violent tornadoes form within this area of strong rotation.

If you are at home during a tornado:
Go to a windowless interior room on lowest level of your house. Go to a storm cellar or basement if your house has one. If there is no basement, go to an inner hallway or a smaller inner room without windows, such as a bathroom or closet.Get away from the windows.Go to the center of the room. Stay away from corners because they tend to attract debris.Get under a piece of sturdy furniture such as a workbench or heavy table or desk and hold on to it.Use your arms to protect head and neck.If you are in a mobile home, get out and find shelter elsewhere.

My natural disaster affects people because it can tear through the ground and people’s houses. Also, it can pick up cars off the ground and throw them up to a mile away. The wind force can break through windows.

My natural disaster can cause loss of life or injury. Economically, it can tear through houses which costs a lot of money to rebuild or buy a new house and everything inside. Tornadoes can cause damage to cars by pushing them over or picking them up and dropping them. This is expensive to repair or buy another car. Anything you leave outside can get destroyed by a tornado which will cause economic damage.
